From 10660 per personSvalbard is famous for its polar wildlife, beautiful landscapes and stunning icebergs. Not only are these huge floating structures a marvel to look at but they also play an important role in the arctic ecosystem and show natural processes of earth development.
Floating Giants of the Arctic
Icebergs in Svalbard come from the glaciers which cover most parts of this area. These glaciers move slowly towards the ocean where enormous pieces break away or “calve” off from their front thus creating icebergs.
These giants differ greatly in terms of size as well as shape; some rise high above water whereas others go deep below it. The unique conditions prevailing around Svalbard like low temperatures together with sea currents help to preserve these ice masses over extended periods so they can drift through fjords and open seas for years.
The beauty that lies within them cannot be ignored – against dark waters of arctic region shines bright blue hue coloured icebergs.
Ice colouration depends entirely on how ice was formed; old, compressed air bubbles make denser types appear vividly blue while recently calved ones may be white or even greenish colored. Each iceberg represents an individual piece of art shaped by wind, water and temperature variations thus creating amazing designs which catch the attention of those lucky enough to see them.
Icebergs are vital to the survival of various species in the Arctic Ocean. These enormous blocks of ice release fresh meltwater into the sea which is instrumental in bringing nutrient rich waters up to surface thus supporting different forms marine life.
The submerged parts of icebergs also provide habitats for algae and other microorganisms, which are the foundation of the Arctic food web.
The presence of icebergs can influence local weather patterns and ocean currents, demonstrating their far-reaching impact on the environment.

From 6000 per person"When I arrived in Svalbard, I never expected to be so captivated by the icebergs. I thought they were just chunks of floating ice, what could I possibly be interested in? I couldn't have been more mistaken. Out on a zodiac, surrounded by these towering natural sculptures, I was in awe. The sheer size of some of them is overwhelming, and with nothing but the soft sounds of ice popping around you, it's a surreal and breathtaking experience that words can hardly capture. Seeing icebergs up close is truly unforgettable."
Exploring Svalbard’s icebergs is an unforgettable experience. Whether by ship, zodiac, kayak, or from the shoreline, visitors can get close to these towering giants, feeling their icy breath and hearing the creaks and groans as they slowly shift and melt.
Our trips to Svalbard include opportunities to navigate through iceberg-filled fjords, offering a chance to witness the ever-changing forms of these floating sculptures up close.
Despite their enduring presence, Svalbard’s icebergs are not immune to the effects of climate change. Rising global temperatures are causing glaciers to retreat at an unprecedented rate, leading to fewer and smaller icebergs.
Witnessing the grandeur of Svalbard’s icebergs is not just a privilege but also a reminder of the urgent need for conservation efforts to protect these natural wonders for future generations.
As climate change continues to reshape the Arctic, the importance of preserving Svalbard’s icebergs and their surrounding environment cannot be overstated.
