Botswana Family Safaris

EXPERIENCES

Botswana is a wild country and home to some of the most luxurious and exclusive lodges in the whole of the African continent. In this guide, you can find some fantastic family safari activities and child friendly lodges, as well as the opportunity for private camping – the perfect idea to cater for all the family.

Our Botswana Destination Specialists will help curate the perfect family-friend safaris in Botswana to suit all members needs and wants. It is also possible to organise a completely separate activity for the younger ones, so you get some alone time.

Great Ideas with Kids in Botswana

  • Spend time with the local San Bushmen in the Kalahari and learn how to track animals or try making fire with sticks (wind dependent!). You can also gain a real understanding into how they live and hunt.
  • Meerkats are always a success with the younger (and older!) generations and there is great access to them in the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans where they are relatively habituated. Get to them early, they have been known to snuggle against humans to steal their warmth.
  • Witness outstanding game of the Okavango Delta; one of the world’s best-known wilderness areas with spectacular wildlife sightings. We always say we can’t predict the expression on a child’s face the first time they see the true size of an African elephant or the ferocity of a lion’s roar, but we can predict, however, that it will be priceless.
  • Head out as a family on a mokoro down Botswana’s waterways for close encounters with the elephant drinking at the water’s edge.
  • We can organise your very own private safari vehicle for game drives, so you can enjoy your wildlife spotting surrounded only by the ones you love.
  • Botswana is a great destination to combine with Victoria Falls or Johannesberg and Cape Town in South Africa, all fantastic places to venture on your family safari.

Botswana Family Safety & Travel

Botswana is one of the most politically stable countries in Africa and we always ensure that we check the FCO travel advice prior to bookings. You must, however, bear in mind that a Botswana holiday is wild and many camps are unfenced. Children are your responsibility on safari and must be under strict supervision.

Botswana Mobile Family Safari

We recommend private mobile camping family safaris to those with children; this offers complete relaxation and a total back-to-nature experience. Your ‘camp hand’ will set up your tents safely and cook delicious cuisine which you can enjoy under the African skies. A private mobile family safari means you will also have your very own knowledgeable guide who not only has a strong passion for the wilderness and wildlife of Botswana but is also highly trained in the art of dealing with families. Your guide will share everything he can with you, inspiring the younger generations to be enthused about the wild and ensuring that you leave with an extra friend.

Bushmen

Most camps and lodges can be reached within 60 – 90 minutes of Maun or Kasane, via light aircraft or game drive.

If you prefer the comfort of a lodge rather than camping, then there are plenty of family friendly safari lodges to stay, some of which can be hired out exclusively for families or groups.

We recommend staying at Camp Kalahari.
