I’ve been lucky enough to have grown up visiting Kenya as I have family living there. So, from a young age I caught the Africa bug and I have been exploring this beautiful, diverse continent and it’s amazing wildlife, landscapes, people and culture ever since! I’m one of the Africa Specialists at Natural World Safaris helping clients plan their dream safari holiday and catch the Africa bug too!
Your favourite travel destination and animal.
Laikipia in Northern Kenya for me ticks every box. It has amazing, varied landscapes, fantastic wildlife, easy to get away from the crowds and feel fully remote whilst offering a range of activities from horseback safaris, fly camping, mountain hikes and much more! My favourite animals are probably elephants. No matter how many times I see them, they still fascinate me with their sheer size but gentle manner. Plus, they are always on the move and active, so I can watch them for hours.
What is your first travel-related memory?
I spent my very early years of my life growing up in the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. My first travel memories are playing on the beach and being fascinated with the bugs and birds on the island, which kick started my love for travel and wildlife.
What is your most memorable wildlife encounter?
Seeing the mountain gorillas in Uganda was the most incredible wildlife experience for me. Being able to see them so close whilst on foot was just breathtaking.
If you could do just one NWS safari, which one would it be and why?
CAR & Chad. Experiencing the wilderness and wildlife of the Central African Republic and Chad would be incredible, given how much less explored these countries are. As well as having the knowledge and guidance from our expert led expedition team.
Why do you travel?
Wildlife, nature, culture and food!
Aside from travelling, how do you maintain your connection to the natural world?
I live in Bristol which has easy access to lots of nature areas nearby. I often get out at weekends to explore and usually take my binoculars or a camera.
What is your favourite souvenir from your travels?
Plenty of Kikoys from Kenya. You can use them like a sarong, or as a towel, or blanket - so useful and versatile!
What is the best travel advice you have received?
Just walk an extra 10 minutes away from the touristy area. Always much quieter!
What's the strangest place that you've visited?
Japan was a weird and wonderful place. So unique and brilliant, I loved it.
Out of all the places you've visited, which one surprised you the most?
Sierra Leone really surprised me. It’s beautiful beaches, mountains and forests, super friendly people, fun beach bars and zero tourists!
