Orca & Mobula Ray Adventure

Set Departure

Take a liveaboard adventure on the Sea of Cortez with an expert crew who have an exceptional knowledge of these waters. Due to its biological diversity, this region was declared a World Natural Heritage Site to protect the precious coral reefs, plankton and algae that attract large numbers of marine animals.

Head out from your yacht onto the skiff for marine watching adventures, you may spot blue whales, humpbacks, whale sharks, dolphins, sea lions, rays and orcas breaching the waves as they feed.

Snorkel alongside mobula rays and catch their acrobatic leaps out of the surface. Pods of Orcas feed on the rays, so you can witness these incredible predators as they emerge from the mass of mobulas. In the evening you may be fortunate to witness swarms of mobula rays feeding on plankton under the Mexican stars from beneath the water - an unforgettable sight.

Days 2-7, Exploring the Sea of Cortez

The spotter plane will head out twice a day to scout for marine life in order to maximise your chances of wildlife viewing. They’ll be looking out for orca, humpbacks, whale sharks, cow nose rays, dolphins and perhaps even blue whales with calves. Typically, you’ll head out on the skiff for your first snorkel in the late morning after the wind dies down. It may take a few swims for the mobula rays to be unconcerned with your presence, so a bit of patience is required. Pods of orcas may arrive to hunt, expertly herding the fever of rays into a tight bunch, as they swirl around them, picking them off one at a time. If you are lucky, you could catch a unique underwater sighting of the orcas through the mass of mobulas.

After a delicious lunch back on your expedition ship you’ll head back out into the waters in the afternoon. In the evenings the ship will head to the calm waters of a bay, where lights will be suspended at the bottom of the boat. These lights make plankton easy to spot for the mobula rays and you may be treated to a fantastic show as they swarm around feeding, beneath the stars.
