RAW is a brand new concept designed to cater to the needs of the more intrepid among you. RAW is about pushing boundaries, about truly exploring and understanding the unsung wilderness regions of the destinations that we offer. RAW is not about visiting the Serengetis or the Masai Maras of the world. RAW is about visiting those hidden gems that have not yet been fully explored, that are not on mainstream tourist routes, that are not yet necessarily on the map.

RAW safaris delve deeper than a first-time safari, and although this may not always give you that checklist of wildlife that first-timers want, what you will experience is travel as it is meant to be.

These safaris focus on exploring destinations at a deeper level than you might on a first visit, to really get under the surface, taking in the parks and reserves that only a few see, but that offer you a true insight into the wildlife and wilderness of a destination.

NWS RAW puts you in the right place at the right time to truly explore a destination and some of the last wild frontiers that it has to offer. RAW takes you out of your comfort zone, whilst providing a structured itinerary that will allow you to safely explore a region where infrastructure may be underdeveloped, the wildlife viewing may not be world-class as of yet, but the experience, ultimately, is REAL.

Who is RAW for?

RAW is for those of you looking for something different. Those of you that may have already travelled with us and seen the majestic parks of eastern and southern Africa, trekked through jungle to spot Borneo’s orangutans, or watched polar bears in Svalbard from the deck of your expedition ship.

RAW is for those of you wanting to delve deeper into the true roots and heart of a country, offering adventurous travellers the opportunity to take it slow and take a step off the beaten track.

RAW is for safari aficionados, travellers that have “been there, done that” and now want something different. Break away from the norm and return to tried and tested countries to experience their RAW side, or discover a completely new destination and broaden your horizons.

RAW stretches the limits and offers an insight into those pockets of wilderness that have not been manicured for the masses and which still retain their integrity and edge. These pockets of untamed wilderness are the reasons we started travelling all those centuries ago - they are the remaining blank spaces on the map, and the last remaining frontiers of real travel.

RAW Africa

A unique conservation and restoration success story, Gorongosa National Park has returned from the brink, thanks to its varied terrain, the richness of its soil, and the blessings of plentiful rain. After several surveys, some of the world’s leading scientists have declared Gorongosa to be one of the most biodiverse places on Earth.

Unlike some other African safari destinations, Chad remains relatively untouched. The wild experiences this remote destination offers are unparalleled. Venturing into the rugged Zakouma National Park is truly unique and regarded as one of Africa’s best kept secrets.

Mozambique: Gorongosa

Known in Mozambique as the ‘Park for Peace’, Gorongosa is one of Africa’s last true wild places with the greatest wildlife restoration story. When the war ended in 1992, the landscape was devastated and more than 90% of Gorongosa’s large mammals had disappeared. Efforts were made to rehabilitate Gorongosa after the war but it wasn’t until 2004, when American philanthropist Greg Carr partnered with the Mozambican government to restore the park, that it started coming back to life. The Gorongosa Restoration Project has worked with the Government of Mozambique for the past 20 years to restore wildlife to the Gorongosa National Park, in what is perhaps the greatest restoration success in Africa.

RAW Whale Safaris

By choosing our trip, you actively support efforts to protect Dominican sperm whales and other marine life. 10% from each booking goes towards buying “whale safe” ocean markers that lead to less whale entanglement and death, yearly trips to take local school children whale watching, contributions to marine science education and other charitable causes on the ground in Dominica.

Between July and October the waters around the Cook Islands in the South Pacific vibrate with the melodies of the humpback whale. This is where they gather to sing and socialise, to mate and give birth. Their song can be clearly heard both above and below the water.

Dominica: Sperm Whales

A unique opportunity to swim with some of the most relaxed marine mammals in the world as they traverse the coastline of rugged Dominica. Travel to the idyllic island of Dominica with one of NWS’s specialist guides and world-renowned photographers – Patrick Dykstra, Joshua Barton, Rita Messing or Sarah Conner – for an unforgettable wildlife experience. Spend seven days on and around Dominica swimming with sperm whales. During your time off, discover the local food and culture or just relax in the Caribbean surroundings.

Cook Islands: Humpbacks

An incredible opportunity to swim with humpback whales and other relaxed marine life in the crystal waters of Aitutaki, in the Cook Islands. Travel to the tranquil Aitutaki, with NWS' expert guides for one of the natural world's most unforgettable wildlife encounters. Humpback whales are by nature one of the most gentle and non-aggressive marine animals, ranging from 12 to 16 metres (39 to 52 feet) in length. Spend eight days on and around Aitutaki, exploring this tropical paradise, snorkelling off uninhabited islands abundant with sea life and relaxing on a private island offering barefoot luxury.
